Inviting Jesus Over for Supper
When I was about nine years old I can remember little old Mrs Pebbles teaching us Revelation 3:20 in our Bible in School class from the Old King James – “Behold I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him and he with me.”
I’m sure she was doing her little bit to plant the seed in the hope that Jesus might one day come into our hearts for supper. Well Mrs Pebbles’ work was a factor in me beginning to read the Bible and then a few months later receiving Jesus Christ into my heart as my Lord and Saviour.
Since then I have come to realize that these words were not originally written for the purpose of evangelism to the unsaved! Rather they were written to a group of Christians in a church called Laodicea in modern day Turkey. Some of these believers had been Christians for many years but Jesus complaint was that they had become “lukewarm.”
The lesson is that we can actually close the door of our heart to Jesus over time. Our call is not to a one-off tea party like it would be with the queen of England. But it is a call to always be having supper with the King of kings every day of our lives. Patsy Cline put it this way in her old hymn –
Just a closer walk with thee,
Grant it Jesus is my plea,
Daily walking close to thee,
Let it be dear Lord let it be.
